THE ISSUE OF UNRECORDED SINS
THE ISSUE OF UNRECORDED SINS
For long a time, this topic has
been on my mind but I often just shrugged it off, seeing it as unimportant. In
school, just the previous term, this topic meandered its way back to my
thoughts. I believe it was something the Holy Spirit wanted me to talk about.
We had a whole week for
interschool competitions like we do every term and as usual, the guys awaited
the arrival of the girls from other schools – I go to an all-boys school. After
the first day, I heard one of my Christian classmates had seriously ‘grinded’ –
that is, dancing by having close contact with a girl with her rear to your
groin area – and that it was so bad to the extent that when the girl was pushed
on the ground, he followed up and jumped on her! I actually took advantage of
the evening prep to question him about it and one of the retorts that
subsequently came up was,” Where in the Bible is it written that grinding and
watching porn is a sin?” This made me think and by the grace of God I received
inspiration by the Lord to write this to everyone out there.
“The eye is the
lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of
light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.
If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”
Matthew 6:22 (NRSV)
Here, the Word of our Lord says
the eye is the lamp of the body. Every lamp needs kerosene to make it produce
brighter light and for a longer period. In this modern day of electric lamps,
one also needs to charge his lamp or put in fresh batteries for the same
effect. You cannot use water to turn on the lamp, you might damage it. You also
cannot put stones in the lamp to switch it on, or even put the power cord in
boiling water hoping for it to charge and produce light. The lamp would
probably get damaged. I hope you understand where I’m getting to. Just as in
our homes, when the electric current is low, the light begins to twitch and
with a moderate current, there is light bright enough for the household.
What I’m trying to make clear
here is that what you feed your eyes on is what will either brighten your body
or darken it. Using pornography as an example, people strip themselves nude and
have sex with each other, doing all sorts of nasty things with each other. It
is clearly written in the Bible that what they do is sinful but what my
classmate asked was of that of the viewer. Pornography is sinful, therefore you
the individual watching something sinful is feeding your eyes with sin,
therefore your whole body will be full of darkness and how great that darkness.
Your soul and spirit get polluted by the corrupt materials you are feeding them
with.
Also, some spirits manifest in
certain things we watch. In porn, there is the spirit of fornication, spirit of
lust, spirit of masturbation, spirit of immorality and many others. In other
intense violent shows, we have the spirit of rebellion, spirit of destruction,
spirit of disobedience and others. All these make dark our souls and body. We
no longer become clean, our hearts become dark and that is exactly what we
bring out of us because the Bible says that from the abundance of the heart the
mouth speak.
“… For we are
the temple of the living God …”
2 Corinthians 6:16
We are God’s temple, we are
God’s house. As a temple of God, how can you defy yourself by allowing into
your body disgusting and sinful things? God is holy and clean, He cannot be at
a place filled with filth. Also, God won’t want to be where he is not needed.
He won’t force himself on you to stop viewing or feeding your body with foul
things – He is a gentleman of the highest class. It is my prayer that the Lord
guides and strengthens us for us not to fall victim to viewing unprofitable
things that do not please Him.
“Do not be
conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. That by
testing, you may discern what is the will of God. What is good and acceptable
and perfect.”
Romans 12:2
As Christians we should not
stray and give ourselves up to the pleasures of the world or flesh. However, we
should be transformed by the renewal of our minds. One may ask, “How can we
renew our minds?”
“1 Blessed is
the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way
of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in
the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he
shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit
in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall
prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind
driveth away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor
sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knoweth the way of
the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
Psalm 1 (KJV)
The Word says, the believer
meditates on the Word day and night and is compared to a tree planted by rivers
of water, which does not wilt, its leaves are evergreen and the water flows
constantly. When we meditate on God’s Word constantly, the Bible likens us to a
tree planted by rivers of water. The rivers of water are needed by the tree to
grow and keep its leaves fresh and green all the time. All believers committed
to meditating on scripture are trees and the Holy Spirit, that is also the Word
of God, is the rivers of water. The Holy Spirit cleanses us and refreshes us as
we meditate on the scriptures. Our minds become renewed and this is seen by the
evergreen nature of our ‘leaves’. With this, as the verse says, we would be
able to discern the will of God, that is, right from wrong.
Just like the tree when a leaf starts
to die, its brown color is quite prominent and can easily be seen amidst the
green leaves. The picture I’m creating is that when you are deeply rooted in
Christ, when you are faced with any situation, it becomes quite easy to discern
what is right to do according to God’s Word and what is wrong.
So in all, we must have a
renewal of mind so that we will have the Holy Spirit abiding in us and we in
Him so that we do not engage in any activity that is not pleasing to Him.
I pray the Holy Spirit guides us
in our daily activities and helps us to draw closer to Him to be able to always
do what pleases Him. Amen.
